Pfizer, the drug maker, said Thursday that the U. S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic alternative to the drug.
The generic version of Pfizer's arthritis drug, Pfizer's Vioxx, would cost about $12.80 a year and be available over the counter, the company said.
Pfizer spokeswoman Liz Canale said the FDA had not yet considered the availability of the generic version of Vioxx, but Pfizer hopes that is the case.
The FDA had approved the availability of a generic version of Vioxx to treat patients suffering from arthritis in 2014.
The generic version of Vioxx is available without a prescription, the company said.
Pfizer also made the decision to limit its sales of Vioxx from 2006 to 2008, when it faced competition from a lower-cost rival.
The company said that after the generic competition, the company would "come up with a generic version" of Vioxx.
"We have a couple of things that are unique to the Vioxx class of drugs. We don't have as many competition and there are more that are out there and we are working with regulatory bodies and the FDA to make sure we can bring that down and we can have the competition," said company spokesman Hank McKinnell.
Pfizer has been fighting to keep prices low and the generic version of Vioxx's patent protection is in the works, the company said.
Pfizer said Thursday that the company will continue to market Vioxx and that it plans to market the drug after it loses patent protection in late 2008.
Pfizer said Vioxx had been available in more than 30 countries for more than a decade.
Pfizer has made many other drugs in the same class, including Celebrex and Plavix, and it is the world's biggest drug maker, and it is expected to sell the drugs in the United States and Europe in the next several years, Pfizer said in a statement.
Pfizer, which makes Celebrex, has a portfolio of more than 20 prescription and over-the-counter products.

CELEBREX 200MG CAPSULE is used in adults to manage osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease), rheumatoid arthritis (inflammatory disease of joints), ankylosing spondylitis (chronic back pain), acute pain and primary dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps).
CELEBREX 200MG CAPSULE is also used to manage juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (in children aged 2 years and above).
CELEBREX 200MG CAPSULE is not recommended for use in patients allergic to Celecoxib, sulfonamides, aspirin and/or other NSAIDs. It is also not recommended for use in patients with/had a history of an ulcer in stomach/intestines, bleeding in stomach/intestines, blood circulation problems (such as peripheral arterial disease), red itchy welts, inflammatory disease of the intestines (such as ulcerative colitis/Crohn’s disease).
The medicine is also not indicted for use in patients suffering from lung problems (such as asthma), heart diseases (such as heart failure, recent heart attack, heart block), severe liver disease (such as advanced hepatic insufficiency) and/or kidney disease (such as advanced renal insufficiency).
Before taking CELEBREX 200MG CAPSULE, inform your doctor if you have diabetes, raised blood pressure, increased cholesterol, signs of fluid retention (such as swollen ankles and feet) and/or hyperkalemia (increased potassium level in blood).
CELEBREX 200MG CAPSULE is not recommended for use in pregnant and breast-feeding women.
CELEBREX 200MG CAPSULE should be used with caution in children and adolescents (aged 2 to 17 years) to manage only juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and is advised to be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years/above) after consulting the doctor.
