A recent study shows that the drug can lead to increased use among elderly patients.
The study, published in theJournal of Clinical and Economic Sciences, examined data from the Danish National Drug Registry (DND). The study compared the use of the NSAIDs Celebrex, Celepix and Celefluridil among elderly patients who were prescribed COX-2 inhibitors. The researchers concluded that the drugs were “a safe and effective choice for the treatment of osteoarthritis” in older patients.
“The use of NSAIDs has been associated with an increased risk of fractures. These findings are consistent with a recent study published in the journalJAMA Internal Medicinewhich found that patients taking the drugs had higher rates of fracture, increased risk of cardiovascular events and were more likely to have osteoarthritis.”
Researchers at the University of Michigan studied the data from the DND. They compared the use of naproxen and ibuprofen among patients who were prescribed COX-2 inhibitors. The researchers found no increased risk of fracture or cardiovascular disease among the patients, however, there was a “strong trend” in the use of NSAIDs. “This trend suggests that this study should be interpreted with caution as the drugs were not prescribed by healthcare professionals,” the study authors write.
The researchers also noted that some of the older patients were also taking ibuprofen. “This finding is consistent with a recent study in which patients taking ibuprofen were more likely to have osteoarthritis than patients taking naproxen or naproxen alone,” the authors write.
The study concluded that “the data presented in this study suggest that a combination of NSAIDs and naproxen is the best choice for the treatment of osteoarthritis”.
The researchers said the study was funded by Pfizer Inc. Pfizer Inc. is the company behind Celebrex. The company also owns the rights to Propecia, a product that blocks the production of prostaglandins.
“The results of this study are significant in light of ongoing research on the risk of osteoarthritis,” the authors write.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- The U. S. Food and Drug Administration today approved the first generic form of Celebrex (celecoxib) to treat ankylosing spondylitis, a non-cancerous softening of the spine that causes painful arthritis.
The drug, which is sold under the brand name Celebrex, is the first drug approved for the treatment of non-cancerous rheumatic pain, osteoarthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. The prescription label for Celebrex contains a boxed warning about the potential for serious, potentially fatal reactions if used with NSAIDs. The most common side effects of Celebrex include gastrointestinal upset, diarrhea, indigestion, and skin rash, all of which are usually mild and temporary. Celebrex has not been associated with a serious adverse drug reaction.
The FDA says Celebrex is safe to use in people with a history of gastrointestinal problems such as ulcers or bleeding. However, a serious reaction to Celebrex is possible if you have stomach ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding that is not properly treated with NSAIDs. Patients who have any of these conditions may be at increased risk of serious, potentially fatal side effects if they take the drug.
There are currently no approved drugs for the treatment of rheumatic pain in children, who often require long-term treatment and treatment for other conditions. There is also no approved drugs for the treatment of arthritis in adults, although the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as celecoxib, may be available under some brand names.
Ankylosing spondylitis is a condition in which spondylitis of the spine is painful and often affects children and adults alike. It is a potentially life-threatening condition that can cause serious, long-term health consequences.
The FDA has issued a letter to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, an independent non-profit body that advises the public that patients with rheumatic or osteoarthritis pain can safely take a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) like Celebrex. The agency has also issued an advisory about the safety of Celebrex and the long-term use of other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as naproxen.
Celebrex and other NSAIDs are used for pain relief and are sometimes prescribed for other medical conditions. Celebrex is not approved for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis in children, but the drug is also used in adults and in children.
